Werewolf Thrills

Skinwalkers
A modest werewolf "epic" that never feels formulaic in the hands of director James Issac. The film is one of horrors most accomplished and deals with the subject of lycanthrope with some imagination. Jason Behr, the consequence of being born with what appears to be a dormant werewolf gene that is awakened when he tastes the warm, "sweet" blood of a red moon. Unable to resist his true nature, he starts killing people in a small rural community. Clearly, the skinwalkers turn in love to hate, because, there is the boy, who can end the curse. All in all this is an action horror what makes for a very fun and entertaining experience.

The film is an action horror in werewolf clothing, and, though it references genre classics such as "The Wolfman", "The Werewolf of London", and even "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in its climax, it is still very much its own animal. There is a welcome depth to the performances and Issac's acceptance of his condition and desire to be destroyed gives the piece a fine sense of tragedy.

Unlke the genre films of today, which make this feel like something made on another planet, "Skinwalkers" really takes its time to establish a solid foundation for its horror and is a refreshing product of far less cynical times in which human warmth was seen as essential, not "uncool".

A fine achievement.

Surprisingly good from my vantage point

Vantage Point (2008)
I must admit I went into the theatre interested, but skeptical. Slowly, I got drawn into things, and by the time the we were at the fourth vantage point, I was fascinated by how all the stories interrelated with each other, and wondering the story would end up.

The acting is uniformly excellent, especially that of Dennis Quaid, who I had previously considered a mostly comic actor, but is very convincing here as a Secret Service agent.

The direction and script are also excellent, especially when you consider both are first-timers in the world of feature films. The script was not without its clichés, but I didn't see most of the plot twists coming, which I can usually spot coming a mile away in a film like this. There was one real groaner of a plot twist that you'd have to be an idiot not to see, but it goes by so fast that it doesn't really matter.

A lot of the audience in the screening I was at got frustrated by the repeated sections, obviously having no attention span. But once the third act of the film kicks into gear, everybody stopped complaining.

Speaking of which, the third act is the payoff which we've all been waiting for. Seeing all the plot threads converge in such a convincing matter was nice, as was the final action scene, which seems like it was plucked right out of one of the Bourne films. This comes as little surprise, since director Pete Travis and Bourne series director Paul Greengrass have worked together in the past.

As skeptical as I had gone in, I came out impressed. Not since The Bourne Ultimatum have I seen such a convincing, engrossing action thriller.

Awesome spectacle and great adventure

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005)
Just watched it then. It is pretty damn awesome. The fights are fantastic and the magic is really cool! It's totally like a video-game in parts, with some amazing hand-to-hand combat in there.

This film is for the fans: "To those who loved this world once before and spent time with its friends, gather again and devote your time..." Besides this ominous opening, the story was not very hard to follow, and Ihave never played a Final Fantasy game. I think it pays to be familiar with Role Playing Games in general; knowledge of the genre kinda helps you grasp some of it better. I think though that if you pay attention, and accept what the film throws at you, it's quite easy to understand. There is a lot that isn't explicitly explained, and if you demand that it should be then you will probably be confused and irritated.

Watching the film is like being dropped into the middle of some grand saga, and having to put as much of the puzzle together as possible. I like that approach; you get caught up in the mystery and confusion that all the characters are going through. But like I said, just be accepting. If a weird red lion thing that talks, turns up and starts kicking ass and taking names, and the other characters just say he's an old friend, accept it and move on; you don't need a biopic flashback, or a tell-all sit-me-down. You are an observer here, of something beyond your experience and undestanding.

So: fantastic graphics and animation, great voice acting, cool video game styled music, involving story and characters, and maybe some of the coolest fights you'll see in a while. It's worth seeing, and while it IS for the fans, it is perfectly accessible for people like me that have never played the games.

Best one of the trilogy

Spiderman 2 (2006)
I've seen this movie on the theater twice.. once on the premiere here in Indonesia, and then the second was one week after. not just that, i even bought the DVD, trust me.. it's that good!

The part that i liked best from this movie was the story. Raimi has put amazing plots to the make the movie enjoyable for everyone (even kids that doesn't care too much about the story would be amazed by the fights in it). From inner conflict, love and the fight against Doc Ock, Raimi and the scriptwriters amazed me till the end.

Maguire was great. Dunst, Franco and Molina were also the vital parts that made this movie so powerful to me. Thanks Raimi, for making such wonderful superhero movie.

Jumped-up

Jumper (2008)
The idea of "jumping" is really neat and the movie creatively and thoroughly explored the possibilities given the premise. Besides the incredible effects, you have to see this in the theaters because of the amazing landscapes and city scenes. From the Colosseum in Rome, to the pyramids in Egypt, if you love to travel, this movie will take you all over the world.

OK, this wasn't the most thought provoking of films. As to the quality of acting, with all the action, there aren't the scenes available to showcase good acting. You go to a movie like this to be entertained for a bit, not for the intellectual stimulation, and both are valid forms of entertainment (unlike what other reviewers may imply).

Besides, Samuel Jackson is great and I always like his roles and having Rachel Bilson for eye candy doesn't hurt either.

Dawn of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead (2004)
There is so many great things you can say about Shaun of the Dead. This film is funny, scary and at times heartbreaking. The cast and director really played every angle perfectly. They gave you characters you actually gave a damn about, and a story that was entertaining.

I have truly never laughed so hard in my life, and the comedic genius of both Simon Pegg and Nick Frost is outstanding, not too mention how well they play off each other. Having been a fan of British comedy for 10+ years I had always thought there would never be a film to come close to funny as Holy grail, now here we have Shaun of the Dead and it is as funny if not funnier than any of the Monty Python stuff out there.

I will say I am ashamed to admit I just only recently watched this film, and it was only because I found Hot Fuzz to be a really great film and the poster mentioned it was from the guys whom did Shaun of the Dead. Well After seeing Shaun I can safely say Shaun is definitely the better of the two films, but Hot Fuzz is very enjoyable.

I am not a spoiler type person, but I highly suggest you check this film out and if you don't get any of the three emotions I mentioned above then you are a shut-in whom should be banned from ever watching another film in the history of cinema.

Gripping Thriller

Eastern Promises (2007)
A teenage girl dies while giving birth, prompting a mid-wife (Naomi Watts) to begin a search for the girl's family, plunging her into the gangster world. Meanwhile, the killing of a man, leads to a driver (Vigo Mortensen) trying to protect his boss, from the friends of the dead man, and himself. As both stories cross he finds himself being drawn to the mid-wife, as she and her own family become potential targets....

Written by Steven Knight, this movie shows just what people will do not only for revenge, but also to keep secrets. Cronenberg, has directed a film that while not up to his last movie, A History Of Violence, or his masterpiece Dead Ringers, is still a gripping thriller. He's greatly helped by good performances from Watts, Sinéad Cusack, Vincent Cassel and Armin Mueller-Stahl as members of the Russian mob and an astonishing performance from Vigo Mortensen as Nikolai the driver. As an actor he is getting better and better and he deserves an Oscar nomination at least for his work here.

Cronenberg doesn't skip out on the violence here either. The movie starts with a brutal throat slitting, shown in it's bloody detail, and a brilliant fight scene in a steam house between gangsters, that's bloody as hell, and for me one of the best action scenes I've seen this year.

It's not all great though. A character twist at one point was a bit obvious, and the idea of a midwife hunting down a girl's family like that, or having members in her own family that are from Russia or a Russian background is a little contrived. But these are only minor flaws.

Cronenberg and Knight have created a gripping thriller, that deserves to be seen.

Hit Me

Hitman (2007)
Being a big fan of the Hit-man games, I was fairly worried when I heard that they were going to make a movie based on it because movies based on video games don't tend to be very good movies...

But after seeing it last night, I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It was actually quite a good movie. It may not win an Oscar or anything, but it's amazing to see Agent 47 up on the big screen. Timothy Olyphant does a surprisingly good job of portraying him too.

The love interest is a bit awkward to anyone who knows Agent 47's nearly complete lack of emotion in that department, but despite what the trailer may lead you to expect, it really doesn't go very far outside of what you've come to know in the games (and what happens when she tries to seduce him is absolutely hilarious and very much in the Agent 47 tradition).

It is indeed a violent movie, and 47 is as cold-blooded as you'd expect him to be. Seeing it tends to make me wish other movie heroes had the same level of guts, just to shoot the bad guy in the face instead of letting him live or anything silly like that. The fight scenes with the other assassins from the Agency are also very well done and quite a treat to see.

All in all, it's quite a good movie. Definitely worth paying to see in the theaters. Hopefully there'll be another one!

Finally 2

Final Destination 2 (2003)
f you liked "Final Destination" you'll really like "Final Destination 2". I remember the commercials for this one and was afraid they were ruining the thrill of this sequel. So I didn't see it in the theaters. I was wrong. If anything the commercials used the film footage to mislead you, so that the surprises were even greater.

For what "Final Destination 2" is trying to do, they do it perfectly. From the script, to the acting to the directing. This was a tough score for me. While it doesn't rate up there with the the best films of all time. In every aspect, they perfectly accomplished what they set out to do. It's a Thriller, full of a lot of unpredictable turns and surprises, and with great action. They wasted no time, the movie starts, they get right into it, and it keeps on at pretty much full pace until it's done.

*Excellent sequel a great thriller*

Final Destination! (2000)
Final Destination has made my list as one of the best horror films in the wake of the teen/slasher revival. in fact it's the most original horror film since the original Scream and it may be better than Scream. There have been many cheap imitations(Urban Legend, i still know what you did last summer, etc) but this one is a keeper.

The film begins with the most exhillerating 15 minutes in recent memory(and if you're afraid of flying be prepared to be shocked). Alex browning(Devon Sawa) is getting ready to leave on a class trip to France. while on the plane he has a vision that the plan is going to explode. Later he awakes from this vison and immediately he goes crazy telling everyone the plane is going to explode. eventually 6 students and alex leave the plane and sure enough moments after the plane takes off it explodes. This is where the story gets interesting by getting off the plane Alex soon realizes that him and his friends have cheated Death and they have to figure out when death is coming back at them.

The one thing i thought was trully good about this film was whenever "Death" came after the remaining students that got off the plane it wasn't some grim reaper type guy you could see. whenever death was around it was very subtle. shadows, wind, etc. death never showed his ugly head. he used everyday thingst o kill his victims. in fact it was stuff that you could accidentally do in your home and that is what makes this film scary.

The acting is great. Devon Sawa proves that he can carry a film. he has great talent. Ali Larter is a terrific actress who is well on her way to becoming the best actress ofher generation, but Kerr smith of dawson's Creek shines here. he was really good and i hope to see him in more films.

Great film worth every dollar i spent to see it.

Tony Jaaaa

The Protector (2005)
Ong Bak was a fantastic achievement by the young Thai fighter America has come to embrace as Tony Jaa. Fantastic stunts, amazing fight choreography, and an overwhelming sense of brutal martial arts action that has been missing in fight films since Jackie Chan's Rumble in the Bronx. However, the overall success of Ong Bak was diminished by the lack of intriguing characters and a fluid story that actually made some sense. Tom Yum Goong starts off on the same foot, but then takes the viewer in an entirely different direction…an example of one of the most explosive and entertaining martial arts movies of ALL TIME.

To go into intricate detail about the plot outlines of TYG will do you no good, it will not make you want to see this movie. What makes me so passionate about Tony Jaa and his visual appeal is his overall dynamic nature in the fight scenes. As told in the plot outline, his elephants get stolen, and he must fight to get them back…and fighting is what he does like no one else I have ever seen. It doesn't matter how many opponents appear before Tony, he takes them all in stride, and excels in dramatic fashion, either by his flying acrobatic kicks or his powerful breathtaking punches. But what truly makes this film unique is Tony's ability to embrace a new type of Muay Thai made especially for the movie: Muay Kotchasan.

Although this may not make much sense to you or interest you, trust me, when you view this film and see Muay Kotchasan put into action, you will witness something never before seen on film. Tony's moves are so brutal at times, you can't help but grimace and wonder how the stunt men could take such punishment. He breaks elbows, rips quadriceps, destroys ligaments, cracks vertebra…I could go on, but the movie pretty much speaks for itself. But, if I had to choose the most exciting part of TYG, it has to be Tony's second bout with Nathan Jones. Learning from his mistakes in the first fight, Tony's adapts his fighting style to his smaller frame, and uses Nathan's size against him in a chilling display of David vs. Goliath…it is quite a sight to behold.

Overall, Tom Yum Goong is an awesome spectacle of Tony Jaa's fighting ability, and if you truly enjoyed Ong Bak, then be ready to be blown away by something far better.

The Twilight Samurai

What can I say about what I've just seen? I'm lost for words to describe what I thought of this film as it's that good.

Firstly before anyone gets this assumption about this film being based as a typical Japanese action flick with swords sparking and flashing around then please look elsewhere as this is more drama based.

Since watching The Last Samurai earlier this year it's been a none stop roller-coaster ride of Japanses flicks (i.e. Dark Water, Casshern, Zatoichi, Onibaba, Kwaiden), the list goes on.

I was keeping a close eye on Hiroyuki Sanada ever since his charismatic portrayal in Ringu and have since become a huge fan of this actor and glad to see his status has further improved with his recent appearance in The Last Samurai too.

This alone demonstrates how the East is winning over it's audiences more than Americans considering the level of spirituality invested in the many actors that are up and coming unlike the types who only seem bent on cashing in on fame and overrated acting.

Tasogare Seibei (Twilight Samurai) tells the story of Seibei Iguchi (played by the great Sanada) who has recently lost his wife due to consumption, thus takes it upon himself to become a Mr. Mum to his two young daughters and sick Mother. Gradually he begins to feel somewhat detached to his duties as a Samuarai as he feels the need to devote his time more to being full-time family man rather than being a noble Warrior, who only seems to front his sword unsheathed considering he sold it to support his family. It's not too long before happiness turns up in the form of pretty young girl (Rie Miyazawa) who rekindles his joy of long lost childhood friendship but also on the run from her drunk ex-husband who's only content is bullying and assaulting her.

All I can say is that Japanese film makers have greater integrity to pulling off better stories than what Hollywood seems to be coming out with these days. With production values being second to none it's pleasing to see how more time and effort has been spent towards character development. Sanada and Miyazawa display great conviction with there behaviours, not to mention the young adorable children.

Though this is based around the same time period as what The Last Samurai was based in, Twilight Samurai seems to take on more emotional approach towards Japan's time period conversion from Edo to Meiji restoration.

Trust me if only Shakespeare had been around to see great works of art like this he'd have dropped dead with great admiration. Hats of to Yoji Yamada, great to see many old school directors making solid films even today. I have to admit that the Japanese seem to have a fondness for making many of there audiences rather weepy as this most definitely touches the heart and soul in all the right places at once.

I though this film was the best film i had ever seen in AGES! it scared me so much and i felt physically sick after watching it. i would warn people before they watched it but they should watch it because it is really really good. the beginning is a bit slow but when it gets into the action it is really good. squeamish and disturbing but very very good! i thought there was to much nudity that was not needed in this film. it was scary but quite funny at times. the scene in which the Japanese girl kills herself after seeing her eyeless face is quite funny actually even though it is obviously not supposed to be. it is quite predictable as well but there you go!

You Kill Me (2007)
You Kill Me is a well-done black comedy starring Ben Kingsley (known best for his role in Ghandi as the title character) as a Buffalo, New York, hit man with a drinking problem, Tea Leoni as his sassy girlfriend, and Luke Wilson as his gay AA friend and sponsor.

After his drinking problem gets in the way of his work, Kingsley's Polish mob family sends him to San Francisco to clean up his act. A spunky real estate agent, hired by the mob gets him a nice apartment and a job at a mortuary, which Kingsley quickly excels at. At one of his first AA meetings, he makes friends with Wilson's character, who is the first to learn about his work and decides to sponsor him. While working at the mortuary, he meets Leoni, who helps him get her stepfather ready for his funeral. They begin an awkward relationship as they help each other cope with their troubles.

This film is well made and is highly recommended.

30 Days of Night (2007) DVDRiP
I am typically not a great fan of vampire films. However,this movie is a new take on an old legend. The setting is fantastic and what could be more scary than 30 days of endless night when you are besieged by vampires. These are not your fathers vampires,nothing seductive or even campy about these guys. They are what the vampire was originally supposed to have been..SCARY! I think of all setting..an arctic or Alaskan frozen,isolated area is a great stage for horror and suspense. Movies like Howard Hawks "The Thing from Another World" and its 1982 sequel "The Thing" use the same setting with admirable results. Even the underrated Stephen King mini-series "Storm of the Century" uses the same cold,barren and isolated setting to create tension,despair and hopelessness. The acting is average,if not slightly above,and the mood and lighting are very good. All in all a movie that made you crave a little more when it ended..and that is what all movies strive for. Although it could have had a few improvements and should have provided a little more background for the story(things sort of just go to hell all at once),it is most definitely a film worth a couple hours of your time.

Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
Wow. Shoot 'Em Up is exactly what it claims to be. An action movie. Balls to the wall, no holds barred, but nothing more. And that's exactly what you get. Don't go expecting high art...SEU doesn't take itself seriously enough for that. But that's exactly what makes it work. It KNOWS it's over the top, and doesn't try to hide it. Clive Owen's Smith character is the Bugs Bunny to Paul Giamatti's Hurtz Elmer Fudd. The film takes the best cartoon elements, makes them flesh, and still kicks in that over the top craziness. Bad puns that are so bad they're good, action sequences that there just for the sake of having an action sequence, and the wildest sex scene ever...it's amazing. It's the funniest, coolest, most amazing mix of stunts, bad one liners and paper think plot lines.

You get everything you expect from Shoot 'Em Up...and it's all great.......enjoyyy

Shinobi is a story about 2 Shinobi tribal villages that must went on a deadly fight. Shinobi is a movie packed with astounding nature scenes, (I wonder if still exists such nature landscapes thru Japan...) a surprisingly impressive fight choreography and a fair story.

What You Should Know Before You SIGN UP For Any Movie Download Site...

My name is Scott Taylor and I wrote this review because I was scammed out of a total of $197 before I found legitimate movie download software. My daughter got a laptop and portable DVD player for christmas and I wanted to find a service that offered unlimited downloads for a flat fee -- I was not going to pay $10 per movie like iTunes and similiar services charge. Well, I'm happy to report that I found a couple legitimate sites but not before I got scammed EIGHT times! I've put together a list of the sites that provided what they promised, the rest pretty much ran away with my money.

My research consisted of signing up for numerous movie download sites, then downloading a couple different movies on each site to find out which sites are legitimate and which are not. In my test I looked at: download speeds, picture quality, ease of use and selection.

After completion of my research I found many sites simply did not live up to their claim! Time and time again I found sites that gave links to outdated download software, download speeds that could tie up your PC for a week, had a very limited movie database and many of the movies I downloaded had picture quality so poor it resembled a camcorder recording from the inside of a movie theater... Not good! If you do sign up for a movie download site, please do not sign up for anything not listed here, you may be very disappointed.

Even though most sites I reviewed did not live up to my expectations, I did manage to find a couple sites that were truly worth every penny! These sites all have ridiculously huge selections, (I found just about every movie I was looking for, and trust me, I was looking for some very hard to find movies) most movies I downloaded had near-perfect picture quality, I got all the right download software (of course), and with some of the movies I downloaded, I got download speeds upward of 300kb! (very impressive) If you are planning to download movies (which, if you like movies, I highly recommend) then these are the sites to use.
